Mikhail Aleshin returns to Carlin

Russian driver Mikhail Aleshin is returning to Carlin for this weekend's GP2 round at the Hungaroring in Budapest, replacing Alvaro Parente in the #25 car.
Mikhail Aleshin is to return to the seat of the Carlin #25 car for this weekend's feature and sprint races in Hungary.

"It's a great opportunity for me to have this experience, so thanks to the team," said Aleshin after the announcement. "I know the car, I know the team and it's a track I know well so I believe we can push for some good results this weekend."

The Russian driver will be making his first start for the team since the Catalunya weekend earlier in the year that hosted the second round of the 2011 GP2 season, and will replace Alvaro Parente who has a scheduling conflict.

Aleshin - who had previous GP2 experience with ART in 2007 - was announced early in the year as one of Carlin's regular drivers for the whole year, but then missed pre-season testing after what were understood to be problems with the financial backing from one of his key sponsors. Oliver Turvey subbed in the car for the team for the test days.

The 23-year-old Muscovite was only confirmed for the first race of the season at Turkey days before the race weekend, but a qualifying crash left him with injured hands and unable to take part in either feature or sprint race. Consequently the second round in Spain became his only 2011 GP2 outing to date, but he finished outside the points in both races and subsequently focused on the German Formula 3 series with Russian team Stromos Artline's Arttech F24 Mercedes.

Oliver Turvey briefly replaced Aleshin in Monaco based on his previous successful history at the circuit, before Carlin settled on Alvaro Parente as a longer term solution to their driver line-up headache. Parente had been substituting for the injured Christian Vietoris at Racing Engineering, and also had to obtain a release from McLaren GT (where he is contracted as test driver of the company's new McLaren MP4-12C GT3) in order to race for Carlin.

Parente has now been recalled for GT3 duties at this weekend's Total 24 Hours of Spa making him unavailable for the GP2 weekend at the Hungaroring, and Carlin have opted to switch back to Aleshin as a known quantity and safe pair of hands for the seventh round of the nine-part 2011 season.

This weekend Aleshin will once again be racing alongside Britain's Max Chilton, who has been Carlin's regular driver in the #24 car throughout the season. It's not confirmed whether Aleshin or Parente will take the #25 car in the remaining two rounds of the season at Spa and Monza.

Practice in Hungary takes place on Friday morning following F1 free practice 1, with qualifying for the feature race taking place on Friday afternoon following F1 free practice 2. The feature race itself is at 2.40pm on Saturday afternoon after F1 qualifying, and the sprint race is on Sunday morning at 9.35am ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary in the afternoon.
