Alexander Rossi and Luca Filippi join Jerez test

27 September 2011

Alexander Rossi, the only US racing driver to currently hold an FIA super license, is to test with Caterham Team AirAsia during this week's two-day session at the 4.428km Circuito de Jerez on 28-29 September.

Rossi is one of the team's key future talents being developed via the AirAsia Team Lotus Driver Development Programme, and this year has been competing in the World Series by Renault. He will be trying out the team's GP2 car at Jerez on the second day of the test, and is already confirmed to return for both days of testing in October at Barcelona.

"He has performed brilliantly in the 2011 World Series by Renault so it is only fitting that we help him further his understanding of how it works at the very top," said team principal Riad Asmat. "We can do that now by giving him the chance to step up to the GP2 series with us at the forthcoming tests.”

"I will do my best to absorb as much as I can and repay the faith the Team Lotus shareholders have shown in me by doing the best job I possibly can over the four days on track," said Rossi.

Meanwhile, 2011 GP2 championship runner-up Luca Filippi will be returning to Coloni at Jerez as part of an all-Italian line-up for the testing sessions. Filippi will be joined the driver he took over from doing the season, Kevin Ceccon, whose participation in the test is a prize for winning the Under 21 Trophy of Auto GP. Filippi will drive on Wednesday morning and Ceccon will take over in the afternoon.

In the other Coloni car will be fellow Auto GP racer Fabio Onidi who won one race and took five podium finished this year. He previously tested with Coloni at Jerez in 2009.

“After an amazing second half of 2011 we want to keep momentum and to start preparing the next season in the best possible way," said Paolo Coloni. "With Ceccon, Filippi and Onidi we are again confirming that helping the best Italian drivers, giving them chances to shine and to grow further, is one of our priorities."

Otehr drivers confirmed include familiar GP2 names Max Chilton and Alvaro Parente for Carlin, while Sam Bird adds a day with Rapax alongside his previously confirmed day at Trident. Adam Carroll is back at Super Nova Racing and 2011 championship team Barwa Addax also confirmed that Dani Clos and Johnny Cecotto will be testing on Wednesday with Jolyon Palmer and Jake Rosenzweig taking over on Thursday.

GP3 champion Valtteri Bottas will be testing for Lotus ART alongside Nathanaël Berthon.
