iSport signs Ericsson for 2012 and GP2 Final

1 November 2011

Sweden's Marcus Ericsson has been confirmed as having signed up to return to iSport International as their lead driver for 2012, after enjoying a successful partnership in this year's championship.

"Having seen Marcus develop into a real front runner in 2011, everyone at iSport are delighted to have Marcus on board for yet another season in which we are hoping to challenge for the title", said iSport team principal Paul Jackson.

"I couldn't be happier," said 22-year-old Ericsson, who said that he believed that with "the continuity from last year, I feel confident we will be competitive to challenge for the championship".

Ericsson will also compete for the team at the GP2 Final event at Abu Dhabi in ten days' time, where he will be paired with the 21-year-old French driver Tom Dillmann fresh from competing in the GP3 Series.

"Tom has shown great pace and capacity to learn in the recent tests and has demonstrated that he is ready to move up from the GP3 Series," said Jackson in a team press release. "As a GP3 graduate, he is eligible for the special prize fund and we will be hoping to help him secure a share of that."

GP2 tyre suppliers Pirelli are offering a cash prize of 15,000 Euros to the most successful of this year's GP3 drivers who enter the GP2 Final. The GP3 graduate with the most points at the end of the feature and sprint races will get the cash, with a second prize of 10,000 Euros also on offer.

Depending on his performance at Yas Marina, Dillmann may also be in with a chance of securing the seat for the full 2012 GP2 Season, but iSport are not yet making any announcements about who Ericcson's team mate will be next year. Britain's Sam Bird partnered Ericsson in 2011.

Other than Ericcson, only two other drivers are currently confirmed for 2012 - Esteban Gutierrez and James Calado, who have both been signed up by Lotus ART for a full season outing as well as appearing in Abu Dhabi.

Meanwhile Trident Racing have also unveiled their driver line up for the GP2 Final, which will be the support event to the F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi on 11-13 November.

After sampling both drivers at the recent two-day test sessions in Jerez and Barcelona, Trident have opted to give race seats for the weekend to Julian Leal and St├ęphane Richelmi.

Colombian racing driver Leal has just completed a full season in GP2 with Rapax, while Monaco's Richelmi made the jump up from Formula Renault 3.5 Series with a GP2 debut for Trident at the season finale in Monza in September, replacing his injured compatriot Stefano Coletti who had suffered back injuries during the previous race weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.
