Coloni show fast pace at Jerez

Scuderia Coloni had cause to be happy with the three day pre-season testing at Jerez, with Stefano Coletti and Fabio Onidi never far from the top of the times.
DAMS might have hogged the limelight at Jerez, with their driver Davide Valsecchi claiming a hattrick of top times during the three day test session ahead of the start of the 2012 GP2 Series season later this month, but Scuderia Coloni had good reason to be almost as happy with the performance of their car and both drivers this week.

Fabio Onidi posted the second-fastest time to Valsecchi on the Tuesday, and Stefano Coletti did likewise on the Thursday. Even on the middle day, both drivers were comfortably within the top ten times.

"I'm very happy by how the drivers coped with the test, they were really focused and the results clearly showed that," said team manager Paolo Coloni after the testing concluded. "We were on top for the whole three days, we boasted some very good performances both in race and qualifying conditions."

Coloni still regretted that their efforts to topple Valsecchi from the top on Thursday were thwarted by a spate of red flags during the day.

"We could have been even quicker and with both of them," was Coloni's opinion of the frustrating day that began with an hour-long red flag for repairs to the curbing. "Stefano was forced to abort two flyers because of the red flags, and in both laps he was improving his times. Fabio couldn't make the most of his fresh 'option' tyres for the same reason."

But as a shakedown of how the team was coming together ahead of the start of the season, Coloni said he couldn't be happier.

“I'm really happy of how the team worked in this test," he asserted. "The feeling between the drivers and the technical staff was immediately good, and throughout the three days we managed to test a lot of different solutions that gave us some very good directions for the next test in Barcelona."

Barcelona is the destination for next week's three day pre-season test from Tuesday March 6 to Thursday March 8. Then the GP2 cars get crated up and dispatched to Sepang, Malaysia for the season opener on March 23-25.

"We are ready to tackle the next test in Barcelona and the first race in Malaysia," said Coloni as the team packed up and hit the road rather than the track on Friday. "I'm confident that we'll be really quick," he said, aiming to keep the momentum going in the upcoming second pre-season test.
