Penalties promote Calado to sprint pole

James Calado might have been robbed of victory in the Saturday feature race, but fate has handed him a 'do over' with an unexpected pole for Sunday's event.
James Calado dominated the Saturday feature race only to be undone by the timing of a safety car midway through the race before he had taken the opportunity to carry out his mandatory pit stop. When he tried to fight back he was left in ninth position - one place off being on the reverse grid pole.

However, a number of post-race penalties have ended up promoting Calado to eighth place after all, meaning he will get another chance to try a lights-to-flag win in the GP2 Series. Better yet, there will be no mandatory pit stops to navigate in the Sunday sprint race.

Calado's good fortune comes at Davide Valsecchi's expense, as for the second time this weekend in Valencia the championship leader fell foul of the race stewards' rulings. This time he was judged to have overtaken under the second of the three safety cars on Saturday and handed a 20s penalty after the race - dumping him down from eighth place to 18th.

Also penalised - and excluded from the race results entirely - were the two Barwa Addax cars of Johnny Cecotto Jr. and Josef Kral, who accidentally used tyres intended for the other driver during their pit stops. Even though the team realised the error and recalled the cars immediately, the stewards ruled it a breach of Articles 25.6 and 25.9 of the GP2 Series Sporting Regulations which meant that both cars had to be excluded from the results.

Less surprising was the ten place grid penalty for Sunday handed to Jolyon Palmer for causing the scary accident with Fabrizio Crestani after diving down the inside line into turn 10, which triggered the second safety car of the afternoon.

And also somewhat inevitable is the ten place grid penalty for the sprint race handed to Rodolfo Gonzalez for spinning Crestani's team mate Giancarlo Serenelli shortly after the restart, which brought out the safety car for a third time.

As a result of the penalties, Calado moves up to eighth place and starts from pole on Sunday morning, while Stefano Coletti moves up to ninth position and Simon Trummer now scores a championship point by being bumped up to tenth.
