GP2 Series championship leader Davide Valsecchi has again found himself running into trouble with the race stewards, with two penalties meaning that the DAMS driver will be starting the British feature race at Silverstone from the back row of the grid.

After being penalised twice at the last round in Valencia, Valsecchi has this time been found to have overtaken other cars during one of the three red flags that occurred in the midday practice session, which resulted in a ten place grid penalty.

But Valsecchi's car was also found to have insufficient fuel on board to make it back to pit road and supply the necessary test sample, seen as a far more serious breach and one that means that all his times in the later qualifying session have been deleted.

The same penalty was handed to Lewis Hamilton in F1 at the Monaco Grand Prix in May, after he also ran short on fuel and parked on track after setting his qualifying lap.

Valsecchi was not alone in having his times deleted, with his DAMS team mate Felipe Nasr also being found to have committed the same infringement.

Coloni's Stefano Coletti and iSport's Marcus Ericsson also stopped out on track in the chaotic qualifying session and were similarly found to be running insufficient fuel. All four cars will now line up on the last two rows of the grid, after being allowed to race despite not technically setting a time within the required 107% time of the pole position driver Fabio Leimer.

The fifth driver to fall foul of the stewards' post-race housekeeping was Giedo van der Garde, who shared Valsecchi's offence of overtaking under a red flag and duly having a ten place grid penalty. As a result, the Caterham driver will now start from 18th place on the grid for Saturday afternoon's race.

The 29-lap feature race 1 will take place on Saturday afternoon at 2.40pm after the F1 qualifying session, while the shorter 21-lap sprint race 2 is on Sunday morning at 9.40am. All the GP2 sessions are scheduled to be shown live on Sky Sports F1.
