Ever since the start of the season, Esteban Gutiérrez has been walking around the paddock with the confident look of someone who knows that no matter what happened in 2012, Grand Prix stardom was just around the corner. And that's just what ended up happening, with Sauber calling him up to replace compatriot Sergio Perez in F1 in 2013.
You'd have thought that this would have given Gutiérrez the boost to really go for glory in the
GP2 championship this year, but he never did quite live up to the expectations we had for him when he arrived in the feeder series after winning the inaugural GP3 championship in 2010. Indeed, there were points when he was looking embarrassingly overshadowed by his Lotus GP rookie team mate James Calado this season.
But Gutiérrez did come good in the end and finished the year with a consistent run of races just as Calado ran out of steam, which was enough to see him slip through and clinch third place in the final standings.
Crash.net voters aren't so easily swayed, though, and have indicated that they expected just a little bit more from the Mexican this year for him to genuinely have earned his way into an F1 seat.
