Britain's James Calado made an immediate impression in the feeder series late last year when he won the post-season
GP2 Final non-championship sprint race which made him a hot property for Lotus GP to sign up for a full season in 2012 alongside F1-bound Esteban Gutiérrez.
Calado certainly hasn't let them down: there can rarely have been a better rookie season performance in the series, as he won the first sprint race of the year in Malaysia and went on to win again mid-season at Hockenheim. There could have been more as well if luck hadn't turned against him on occasion, but he still ended up with seven podium appearances in total to add to two poles and one fastest lap. Whole championships have been won with less.
Calado faltered toward the end with a poor weekend at Monza and then struggling with illness in Singapore, but
Crash.net voters haven't let that discourage them from placing Calado in third place in our Driver of the Year standings. And quite right too: no wonder Lotus GP have acted quickly to sign him up for a proper title run of his own in 2013.
