There felt like there was a definite pro-Razia sentiment among readers during the season, and so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised by the fact that the 2012 GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi is pipped to the post in the Driver of the Year ballot.

In reality it was very hard to separate Valsecchi and Razia, who were team mates last season for the then-new Caterham Team AirAsia. Razia led after the first weekend in Malaysia, but then there was that incredible run for Valsecchi which netted him a hattrick of victories in back-to-back weekends in Bahrain that was to be the backbone of his 2012 championship campaign.

Did Valsecchi start to play it a little too safe and allow Razia the chance to edge closer and closer over the next four events? He lost the lead in the standings at Silverstone and then had to struggle to stay in touch with Razia before finally drawing level at Spa; and then the Italian held his nerve as Razia faltered and was hit by poor luck at Monza which left him too far adrift to counter at the season finale in Singapore.

The final average vote scores between the two were very close. It could have gone either way. And to be honest, either Valsecchi or Razia would have been worthy winners of our Driver of the Year vote this year.

Check back later in the week for the details of the averages each driver scored, and what happened to those drivers outside the top ten.
