Trident Racing was in a slightly different position from the majority of other teams working at the Circuit de Jerez this week, as it is still to make a decision regarding its selection of drivers for the 2013 season, which begins in a little over three weeks in Malaysia on March 22-24.
For the Jerez test, the team decided called in the 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion Robin Frijns - the Sauber F1 test and reserve driver - to work alongside Nathanaël Berthon, who had a season of GP2 experience last year with Racing Engineering
"These three test days have certainly been positive for us," said Trident team principal Maurizio Salvadori. "We have worked well with both drivers, Nathanaël Berthon and Robin Frijns, who gave us back excellent feedback.
"Nathanael brought home a great job with our engineers," he continued, saying that Berthon's experience of the GP2 car and the way that it used tyres. "He adapted quickly to the characteristics of our car and allowed us to complete all the work that we had foreseen in the program.
"With regards to Robin, it is important to underline that he was one of the only two début drivers in these Tests who had zero experience, as of last Tuesday, with the Dallara GP2 car," Salvadori pointed out. "From the beginning however, Robin demonstrated that he was able to obtain excellent results.
"Robin immediately demonstrated a great ability to adapt and quickly obtained very satisfying results standing out for his great potential," he summed up. "All in all, it is important to highlight that on equal terms with the other drivers with used tyres, he was always in the first positions."
Whether their performances will lead them full time seats in the series for 2013 remains to be seen.
In the short term, Trident are still to announce who will be testing the car for them next week at the Circuit de Catalunya. The second three-day pre-season test, which runs in Barcelona from Tuesday March 5 until Thursday 7 March, will be the last opportunity the teams and drivers have for any practice before all the cars and equipment and freighted off to Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit for the season opener in a little over three weeks time.See full Tuesday test times
