Daniel Abt moves to Hilmer for 2014

After a disappointing rookie season in GP2 with ART, Daniel Abt has signed up to return to the feeder series for a second year with a switch to Hilmer Motorsport.
Last year's GP3 Series runner-up Daniel Abt has signed up to compete with Hilmer Motorsport in his second season in GP2, following a frustrating first season in the feeder series for the 20-year-old German at ART.

Abt struggled more than expected in his rookie season, but showed signs of strong improvement when he finished in the points in both the races of the final round of the season at Abu Dhabi earlier this month.

He followed that up by working with Hilmer at the post-season tests which were held the following week at the Yas Marina Circuit, and ended the three days with the fifth fastest time of anyone taking part.

That's persuaded team principal Franz Hilmer to sign up Abt for 2014, which will also be the team's sophomore season in the series after having joined GP2 just in time for the start for the 2013 campaign.

"I'm very happy that the cooperation with Hilmer has worked out. The tests have shown what's possible," said Abt, who hails from the same Bavarian region as the Hilmer team is based.

"“We're speaking exactly the same language and are determined to attack right from the beginning. I'm looking forward to this new challenge and would like to thank my partners who have made this collaboration possible for me."

"I'd like to thank ART," Abt added. "The team gave me the opportunity to gather a lot of important experience in the GP2 series. But now the time has come to take the next step."

Hilmer said that he was delighted to sign Abt for 2014, making him only the second confirmed driver for next season following Rapax's early confirmation that they had extended their contract with Simon Trummer for a second season.

"In Daniel we've gained a driver who absolutely corresponds to our wishes," said the team boss. "In the coming season we're going to show how powerful this Bavarian-Bavarian combination is."
