Bird receives 2013 BRDC Graham Hill Trophy

4 December 2013

Sam Bird has been recognised as having put in the "most meritorious performance by a British driver in single-seater racing" by the British Racing Drivers' Club, after being handed the 2013 Graham Hill Trophy at this year's BRDC awards.

Bird was recognised for his strong season in the GP2 Series, which saw him finish as a strong runner-up to the 2013 champion Fabio Leimer, who was pushed all the way to the final weekend of the year by the Briton before wrapping up the title in Abu Dhabi last month.

Bird's strong run of consistent results throughout the year which included five race wins was also crucial to his team Russian Time topping the team championship in the squad's maiden year in the feeder series.

“I am very proud to have been chosen by the BRDC to receive this award," said Bird. "It is a true honour to join the list of illustrious names that have held this Trophy before me."

Among those who have been recipients in the past are Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Dario Franchitti. This year, Bird has been working alongside Hamilton in F1 at Mercedes, where he has been the team's official test and reserve driver.
