Schedules confirmed for 2014 GP2 and GP3 seasons

6 December 2013

With the confirmation of the F1 calendar for 2014, the schedules for next year's GP2 and GP3 seasons have also now fallen into place and were duly announced by the series organisers on Friday afternoon.

"2014 will consist of eleven rounds, all of them on F1 tracks in front of the F1 paddock and on F1 tyres," confirmed GP2/GP3 CEO Bruno Michel. "2014 will be our tenth season and we'll see once again thirteen teams competing for the title and twenty-six drivers whose only goal is to showcase their skills and impress the rest of the F1 world."

Both championships will join F1 in visiting Spielberg in Austria during June, and the new racetrack at Sochi in Russia later in the year in mid-October.

"I am delighted to add Sochi to our calendar as well: this is another prestigious F1 circuit which our drivers will be able to learn," said Michel. "Our European season now also includes Spielberg: it will be the first time that GP2 goes to Austria, another F1 venue."

With the number of rounds of GP2 competition remaining fixed at 11, that means two of this year's events have been omitted from the calendar, with organisers opting to drop the visits to Malaysia and Singapore on cost grounds.

"In our effort to cut freight costs, we have decided to keep the same number of events as we did last season and to only maintain Sakhir and Yas Marina as overseas rounds; each opening and closing our season," explained Michel.

Cost was also a factor in deciding the location for GP2's pre-season testing. Previously that's taken place in Spain at Jerez and Catalunya, but with the first race of the calendar set for Bahrain in April the testing has been relocated to the Middle East.

"We have decided to organise our two pre-season test sessions, firstly in Yas Marina and then in Sakhir, with the season opener in Bahrain two weeks later," explained Michel. "This is in order to keep down the costs, but also to test on F1 circuits where two events will take place, as well as enjoying great weather for testing."

With GP3 not making the trip to Bahrain - its fifth season will start a month later at Catalunya instead - those teams will instead test at Estoril in March and then move to Spain for two pre-season tests in April. GP3's season rises to nine rounds in 2014, with last year's stand-alone outing at Valencia dropped to make way for the two new events it shares with GP2 and F1.
