Coletti joins Racing Engineering for GP2 title tilt

Stefano Coletti joins GP2 Series champions Racing Engineering in the hope of landing 2014 crown.

Racing Engineering has confirmed the second part of its 2014 GP2 Series line-up, announcing the arrival of Stefano Coletti as it prepares to head to Abu Dhabi for pre-season testing.

The Monegasque driver looked set to finally end what appeared to be a GP2 jinx by racing into a handy half-time lead last season, but faded badly to not score a point down the home stretch and eventually wound up only fifth overall after being overhauled by Racing Engineering's eventual champion, Fabio Leimer, amongst others.

Coletti's pace is not in doubt, as three race wins, three podiums, one pole position and three fastest laps in 2013 can attest, but he can rival the likes of Davide Valsecchi and Giorgio Pantano for the length of time he has spent chasing the GP2 crown. However, with both Pantano and Leimer having turned a spell with Racing Engineering into title success, the 24-year old clearly has a similar objective as he teams up with European F3 champion Raffaele Marciello for 2014.

“I am really happy and looking forward to working with Racing Engineering this year,” Coletti commented, “During recent years, they have proven to be a very serious and competitive team. I hope this year will bring us a lot of success.”

Team president Alfonso de Orléans- Borbón is equally pleased to have landed a pilot he believes still has a title run in him, and expects the Coletti-Marciello tandem to be a formidable one.

“We have had the chance to closely follow Stefano's career for the last few years, especially in 2013, and what we saw was a very fast and determined driver, who knows how to fight on track and take race wins,” he commented, “We are very pleased that he is joining us for the 2014 season and I am convinced he will be a title contender this year.

“Stefano is a very pleasant and hardworking driver, I am sure he will fit in well with the team. With Stefano and 'Lello' we have a driver pairing one can only dream of and we are all really looking forward to the start of the season.”
