Racing Engineering aiming for another GP2 podium double
After seeing Stefano Coletti and Raffaele Marciello break into the top three in Austria, Alfonso d'Orleans-Borbon is targetting more of the same at Silverstone.
Having bounced back from an unfortunate start to the 2014 GP2 Series campaign with a string of top three finishes in Austria, Racing Engineering has its sights set on a return to the podium at Silverstone this weekend.
Both veteran Stefano Coletti and rookie Raffaele Marciello (twice) took home silverware from the Red Bull Ring, and team president Alfonso de Orléans-Borbón is confident that, provided the Spanish squad's luck holds, there is no reason not to expect more of the same at one of the series' favourite stops.
“Absolutely, we have the cars and [the driver] have the talent to do it,” he insisted, “There is no reason why we cannot aim for a double podium in both races, although we must keep in mind that the Silverstone track does throw us some nice surprises sometimes, so it won't be boring.”
Asked why he was so optimistic, and what the team's Silverstone secret was, Borbon was a little less forthcoming, but appeared confident that the bad luck that had plagued it in the opening three rounds was now a distant memory.
“It's a secret, I cannot tell you,” he said of the set-up, “Let's just hope that, if ever a safety car is deployed, it is done in front of the leader, not after him...
Racing Engineering is well-known for its meticulous preparation, and the president was quick to praise his backroom boys for the part they played in running at the front in Austria, given that GP2 had not had the chance to race at any previous iteration of the Red Bull Ring in its short history.
“It is a quite short and technical track, but our preparations have paid off since we all started on the same level for the weekend,” he said of the 26-strong field, “I think 'Lello' could have had pole position, but was hindered by a driver on the last corner, while Stefano could have won on Saturday, but was denied by a backmarker and lost precious time before the pit-stop, although he did get the fastest lap on Sunday to make up for it.
“But both had podiums and, in reality, apart from some bad luck, we were the fastest team all weekend, so it's quite satisfying. The team did a very good job and the drivers were very, very quick.”
That pace has been evident from round one, and Borbon is now hoping that the team has the good fortune to accompany its obvious performance.
“We have always been among the fastest during the whole season, but some bad luck plagued us from the start, so now we have some serious catching up to do,” he acknowledged, “In regards to how we work and set-ups, we will pretty much continue doing what we have done until now. There is no need to change anything since it obviously works – but let's just hope drivers avoid crashing into us from now on!”
