With six seasons and six team titles under their belt, Racing Engineering will bid
adios to the Spanish Formula Three Championship in a bid to concentrate on their program in the GP2 Series.
A decision regarding the Andalusian squad's future in the series had been anticipated after they failed to appear for pre-season testing, while three of the four drivers they confirmed for 2007 before Christmas were appearing with other teams.
However, while the team admit their participation in both Formula Three and GP2 was proving the ideal stepping stone for drivers, engineers and mechanics, the most obvious example being Javier Villa who moved up to GP2 with the team after a season in F3, they claim it was now time to concentrate on the greater challenge in hand, hence the decision to quit whilst at the top.
One of only two teams yet to complete their GP2 driver line-up for 2007, Racing Engineering claim they are now eager to put all their resources behind their assault, with team principal Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon insisting they are looking forward to what the season brings.
“Six consecutive team championships, three driver championships, two driver vice-champions and a third place. Plus all four Racing Engineering drivers winning within one season, what more could we have expected?
“But now it's time to concentrate on new goals and challenges. Some people want an easy life, we prefer challenges.”
Competing since the series' conception in 2001, Racing Engineering have always entered at least three cars for drivers including Alvaro Parente, Andy Soucek, Borja Garcia and most recently Nicolas Prost, helping them to dominate the team standings for six years in succession. They have also managed three drivers' titles over time for Garcia in 2004, Ricardo Mauricio in 2003 and Ander Vilirano in 2001.
