Romain Grosjean has taken his first pole position in the GP2 Series after edging out Andreas Zuber to top spot in qualifying for the latest rounds of the season at the Hungaroring.

In a tightly fought qualifying session, the ART Grand Prix driver posted a best time of 1m 27.782s in the final minute of the session to end up just 0.082secs clear of Zuber, who in turn was only 0.002secs quicker than third placed Lucas di Grassi.

Zuber had set the pace early in the session for Piquet Sports, having been left to fly the flag alone for the team with Pastor Maldonado sidelined by his shunt in practice earlier in the day.

Renault F1 tester di Grassi then moved ahead of Zuber into top spot as many of the fancied runners elected to return to the pits early on with a four-way battle for pole then developing at the head of the times.

Grosjean in particular was looking impressive, constantly breaking the fastest first and second sector times, but then losing time through the final corners to prevent him from jumping to the top of the times.

When Karun Chandhok spun his iSport car at turn twelve with just three minutes remaining on the clock it appeared that di Grassi had the session wrapped up, but quick work by the marshals to remove the Indian's car gave the field one last lap to get it right.

Grosjean duly stepped up to the plate and finally got the final sector of the lap right to jump to the top of the times with Zuber following the Frenchman across the line to also edge ahead of di Grassi and demote the Campos man down to row two. Vitaly Petrov also nailed a strong lap right at the end to join his fellow Campos man on row two.

Despite the spin, Chandhok managed to hold on for fifth position, just ahead of Mike Conway and points leader Giorgio Pantano, while Bruno Senna, J?r?me D'Ambrosio and Kamui Kobayashi completed the top ten.

In a session that wasn't just tight at the top, the leading 14 drivers were covered by only a second.
