Giorgio Pantano has extended his lead in the GP2 points standings to 13 points after snaring the final pole position of the 2008 season at Monza.
The Racing Engineering man clinched top spot with a best time of 1min 31.220secs around his home circuit to edge out Lucas di Grassi by just 0.019secs in the race for pole.
As well as snaring the two bonus points on offer for pole, Pantano also saw his chances given a boost when main rival Bruno Senna, suffering from a lack of rear-end grip, could only post the twelfth quickest time.
“I am happy because I scored another two points and this increased the gap to the rest,” Pantano reflected. “It's also important for tomorrow as we don't yet know the conditions, but if it is dry, I am sure there is a good chance to win. In any case, I will try to have a good race and not take risks."
di Grassi left it late in the session to secure his place on the front row after battling ahead of Luca Filippi, with Sebastien Buemi also getting the edge on his Arden team-mate before the chequered flag flew to signal the end of proceedings.
Vitaly Petrov was fifth quickest in the second of the Campos entered cars with Pastor Maldonardo – who had paced the wet practice session earlier in the day – rounding out the top six for Piquet Sports.
Andi Zuber, Roldan Rodriguez, Javier Villa and Karun Chandhok completed the top ten.
