Dubai sprint race cancelled due to weather.

GP2 Series organisers have confirmed that the Dubai sprint race has been cancelled due to poor weather overnight.

Heavy storms have led to excessive flooding at the Dubai Autodrome and after track inspections by the race directors, it was decided that it would be impossible to run the races safely due to the volume of water on the circuit and the likelihood of improvements during the day.

Series organisers will now decide in the near future what effect the cancellation of the race will have on the championship season.

Dubai Autodrome Track Manager Richard Birch, "This is some of the worst flooding I have encountered at the
circuit," Dubai Autodrome track manager Richard Birch said. "A couple of years ago we had a similar situation but were fortunate that the rains did not affect a major
event as it has done this weekend.

"It is a shame as there was a very good crowd yesterday and we were expecting a big crowd again today as the weekend falls conveniently during the holiday period.
However nothing could be done about the rain that has unfortunately stopped play."

It always rains in Dubai at this time of year and the rain was no heavier than previous years. Unfortunately the Dubai Autodrome has always relied on luck and in every previous case they just hope that the water evaporates before an international event. This time their luck ran out. Why don''t they just invest in drainage. It made everyone associated with the Dubai and the circuit look stupid.
