Valsecchi secures Renault role

1 January 1901

Durango driver Davide Valsecchi admits he is honoured to have been named as a part of the Renault Driver Development programme for the 2009 season.

The Italian was one of three drivers added to the programme at the launch of the new Renault R29 at the Portimao circuit in Portugal, with Frenchman Charles Pic and Dane Marco Sorensen also securing RDD status.

The announcement means that Valsecchi will now be guided by Renault F1 team boss Flavio Briatore as he seeks to make the move up the motorsport ladder towards Formula One.

“This is an honour for me,” Valsecchi said. “Now I hope to demonstrate I deserve it.

“First of all I wish to thank the people who helped me to arrive here. In front of me there is a very demanding GP2 season where I must deliver clear and convincing results, which is not easy. I will do my best in terms of commitment, trying to keep to right concentration to be fast without making mistakes.

“But today I want to enjoy the event till the end because for me to be here, near a champion like Alonso and a team like Renault, is really very wonderful.”
