Barcelona - test times - April 19

Davide Valsecchi topped the times on the first day of GP2 pre-season testing at Barcelona, with Luca Filippi, Charles Pic, Jules Bianchi, Esteban Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean also on form.
Sunshine and warm and dry conditions greeted the 26-car GP2 testing line-up in Barcelona as they gathered for the first day of the last two-day pre-season testing ahead of the start of the season in May in three weeks time. The cars and drivers entered for the test sessions were the same as those who took park in the two-day test at Silverstone earlier in April.

The morning session got off to a rather quiet affair with the first 30 minutes reserves for installation laps before Rapax's Julian Leal finally set a proper laptime. Arden's Jolyon Palmer and Carlin's Max Chilton then topped the times, before Davide Valsecchi emerged at the halfway mark to break through the 1:30 mark for the first time in his Team AirAsia.

Dams' GP2 Asia series champion Romain Grosjean and Lotus ART's GP3 series champion Esteban Gutierrez were soon closing on Valsecchi's time but in the end it was Barwa Addax's Charles Pic who bumped the Italian off the top by the time the chequered flag came out for the end of the morning stint.

In the afternoon, Valsecchi was quick to once again take charge of the top spot, but one hour in and the tempo of the session changed when Jules Bianchi eclipsed the AirAsia driver's time by 1.9s as the teams started to focus again on pace. Ocean Racing's rookie signing Kevin Mirocha briefly went second but then Chilton, Grosjean and Gutierrez all had a go and crept gradually closer to Bianchi's formidable benchmark.

Finally Super Nova's Luca Filippi bumped Bianchi off the top inside the final hour, before Valsecchi came out and improved the top time still further with some thirty laps to go in the session. However, the last half hour - when drivers would typically get their heads down and put in their best times - was interrupted by two brief red flags, one for Trident's Stefano Coletti stopping out on track just five minutes before the scheduled end of the day's activity, and as a result Valsecchi's time was unbeaten when the chequered flag ended testing for the day.

The second day of this two-day pre-season test will be held tomorrow, Wednesday April 20, starting at 9am local time.

The first round of the 2011 GP2 main series will be held over the weekend of May 6-8 as one of the support races to the F1 Grand Prix of Turkey in Istanbul.
