Barwa Addax's Josef Kral celebrated his return to the squad after missing Bahrain, by setting the fastest time in Barcelona in Friday practice with a lap of 1:31.109 ahead of Lotus GP"s James Calado and DAMS' Felipe Nasr.

Drivers generally opted to run only one stint each in the session, as tyre preservation proved the primary concern ahead of Friday afternoon qualifying, the 37-lap Saturday feature race and the 26-lap Sunday sprint race.
