A Barcelona GP2 qualifying session dominated by the timing of when to make the sole flying lap offered by the soft compound option tyres saw James Calado win the lottery and pop into the top spot with a time of 1:30.655s.

With the grip rapidly fading from the Catalunya circuit as the session wore on, Fabio Leimer was one of the few drivers to manage to improve his time and pop into second position by the end, to start the Saturday feature race from the front row alongside Calado.
