Luca Filippi nearly claimed the lead into the very first corner at the start of the Monza feature race after Giedo van der Garde's struggled to get away from the front row of the grid, but ultimately had to wait until after the first round of pit stops before he was able to blast his way past polesitter Max Chilton at Ascari on lap 10.

Johnny Cecotto Jr. overcame a five place grid penalty left over from Spa and made a later pit stop strategy work for him to claim second place, while Marcus Ericsson picked up third place after demoting Chilton on lap 23.

Fabio Leimer was involved in two collisions into the turn 4 Variante della Roggia chicane, the first with Luiz Razia on lap 8 and the second with Felipe Nasr on lap 13. The Racing Engineering car survived both incidents and finished in fifth place, but both the other cars retired. Razia's exit coupled with sixth place for Valsecchi hands the Italian an eight point lead in the drivers' title battle.

Stefano Coletti - ousted from Coloni in favour of Filippi and now racing for Rapax - had his own small compensation when he claimed eighth place and the provisional sprint race pole for Sunday morning under the reverse grid rules.
