Victory for Davide Valsecchi in the Monza sprint race handed the DAMS driver a 25pt lead in the 2012
GP2 drivers' championship with one round to go over Luiz Razia, who failed to score a single point this weekend in Italy.
A flying start from the second row allowed Valsecchi to split the front row cars of Stefano Coletti and Jolyon Palmer and take the lead, pulling Fabio Leimer through with him to the front. Leimer pushed hard to take the position from Valsecchi over the following 21 laps but the Italian was in no mood to let the prize slip through his fingers after having done all the hard work.
Marcus Ericsson also had a good start but overran the first chicane putting him into a race-long battle with Coletti for fourth place that was finally determined by the last run through Ascari, which saw Ericsson run wide and lose multiple positions before the chequered flag.
Coloni's comeback kid Luca Filippi's dream return ended with a bump: he sustained front wing damage at the start and ended up last of the cars still running at the end of the race after pitting for a new nose.
