Malaysia - Friday practice

ART's James Calado got the 2013 GP2 season underway in the best possible style, setting the fastest time in Friday practice in Malaysia.
James Calado topped the times in the first GP2 Friday practice session of 2013, with a lap of 1:45.403s on the 15-turn, 3.444-mile Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.

His best time of the 30-minute session was just 0.019s faster than Simon Trummer in the Rapax, with Tom Dillmann also within two tenths of Calado's benchmark for new team Russian Time. IN total, 14 drivers ran within a second od one another at the top of the timesheets.

The top times were all set within ten minutes of the start of the session, with later runs largely unable to improve on the initial times. Jolyon Palmer was the exception to the rule in the Carlin, setting his best time just three minutes from the end.

There were no stoppages, although Racing Engineering's Julián Leal went through the gravel trap, and Kevin Ceccon (Trident) was forced to take to the run-off after a close call with Sergio Canamasas (Caterham Racing).

Qualifying takes place after the F1 teams have completed their Free Practice 2 session on Friday afternoon.
