GP2 Monaco 2013: Practice times

23 May 2013

A largely trouble-free GP2 Series practice session on Thursday saw Sam Bird (Russian Time) quickly take the top spot from Arden's Mitch Evans before Marcus Ericsson went fastest ten minutes in to the 30-minute session for DAMS with a 1:23.049s.

Bird's team mate Tom Dillmann took the honours back with a lap almost two-thirds of a second faster and Bird then shaved another five hundredths off that next time around.

After the mid-session pause in proceedings, a swap to super-soft tyres allowed Bird to lower the bar dramatically to 1:21.512s, still just edging Dillmann who was ahead of Evans and Carlin's Jolyon Palmer. Last year's feature race winner Johnny Cecotto Jr. finished in sixth place for Arden while championship leader Stefano Coletti could manage only 17th for Rapax.

Stéphane Richelmi's session came to a premature end when he spun his DAMS in the final sector at Rascasse before the midway point. Although he was able to get the car pointed back in the right direction he stalled the car in the process and needed recovering by the marshalls. Other incidents were the usual lock-ups and overruns that were quickly addressed.

Qualifying for this weekend's GP2 Series race takes place on Thursday afternoon at 3.15pm following F1 Free Practice 2; the 26 cars will be split into two 15-minute groups from 4.15pm local time (3.15pm BST). The 42-lap feature race is on Friday morning at 11.15am local time (10.15am BST) and the 30-lap sprint race on Saturday afternoon at 4.10pm local time (3.10pm BST) after F1 qualifying.
