Silverstone: Qualifying times

Marcus Ericsson was on top of the timesheets when a new pulse of rain effectively brought qualifying to a premature end and left the DAMS in pole position alongside Sam Bird.
Concerned about incoming rain, teams were quick to get out as soon as they could on a largely completely dry track at the start of the half hour qualifying session at Silverstone on Friday afternoon. Hilmer Motorsport's Robin Frijns was an early provisional polesitter but was soon usurped by Barwa Addax's Rio Haryanto and then by Sam Bird, before Marcus Ericsson went 0.371s faster than the Russian Time to go top of the timesheets for DAMS with a lap of 1:40.716s just before the halfway point of the session.

It initially seemed that there was still plenty of scope for cars to improve their times from there. However, a flurry of spins indicated otherwise: Daniël de Jong sent the MP Motorsports car spinning around and nearly hit the wall at the same spot that Ferrari's Felipe Massa had managed in F1 Free Practice 2, while Jake Rosenzweig had a scare with a semi-spin of his own in the Barwa Addax. De Jong's team mate Adrian Quaife-Hobbs was lucky to keep it off the barriers himself when he cut a corner and lost traction on the wet kerbing.

It soon became apparent that a light rain was indeed now falling over Silverstone. Teams scrambled to turnaround their cars and get their drivers back out again after the mid-session pause, but it was too late as slips for ART's James Calado and Carlin's Jolyon Palmer quickly proved. The grid was effectively frozen as it stood and the only further action was a few cars taking the opportunity to scrub in some slick tyres for Saturday afternoon's feature race.
