Monza: GP3 race results

MW Arden's Daniil Kvyat continued his impressive run in the GP3 Series with a race 1 win in Monza and a runner-up position in race 2 which was won by ART's Jack Harvey.
MW Arden duo Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz Jr. topped the timings in the official Friday afternoon practice session at Monza, ahead of Alexander Sims who was returning for a second outing with Carlin after claiming victory in the second race at Spa. Team boss Trevor Carlin had hailed Sims as "the epitome of a professional racing driver in his ability, feedback and attitude."

Kvyat went on to claim an emphatic maiden series pole for race 1 by half a second in Saturday morning qualifying, with the third MW Arden driver Robert Visoiu taking up the shotgun position ahead of a late flier from Marussia Manor Racing's Tio Ellinas. Sims had a gravel excursion on his way to fourth while his Carlin team mate Nick Yelloly spun after running wide over the kerbs but with enough in hand to claim fifth on the grid, while home favourite David Fumanelli stopped his Trident at turn 2 resulting in local waved yellows and left him having to be satisfied with sixth place.

Kvyat claimed a lights-to-flag victory in race 1 on Saturday afternoon, largely thanks to being far enough ahead into the first chicane to avoid being caught up in a multi-car accident sparked by a lunge down the inside by Marussia Manor Racing's Dino Zamparelli that put him onto the grass and spearing into the side of team-mate Ellinas and also taking out Visoiu while tipping Carlos Sains Jr. into a spin and leaving Conor Daly with a race-ending front-right puncture. Yelloly ended up in second while Facu Regalia - ho survived a spin at the end of the formation lap - passed Sims for third place. When Sims tried to counter attack he left himself open to a pass by bamboo Engineering's Lewis Williamson in the run down to the first Lesmo. Further incidents saw Alex Fontana lose control of his Jenzer Motorsport car at the Parabolica and Luis Sa Silva (Carlin) ran into the back of Ryan Cullen (Marussia Manor Racing).

The result put Patric Niederhauseron on pole for the Sunday morning race 2 from which Zamparelli had been excluded for his race 1 indiscretions, but the Jenzer stalled at the start and got clipped by his own team mate Alex Fontana which handed the lead to ART's Jack Harvey, while in the run down to turn 1 Ryan Cullen left his braking too late and ran into and over the back of Giovanni Venturini's Trident which forced a safety car for the clean-up. Harvey consolidated his lead at the restart, while behind him the racing was fast and furious as man of the moment Kvyat forced his way up to second spot ahead of Williamson who held on to the final podium position ahead of Regalia at the chequered flag. That means Regalia's lead in the rivers championship is down to seven points ahead of the surging Kvyat with one race remaining.

The GP3 series now goes dormant for the next two months until the final round of the 2013 championship is staged at the Yas Marina Circuit in the United Arab Emirates on November 1-3 which will decide the driver and team championships.
