Abu Dhabi: GP2 and GP3 Test times (3)

Stoffel Vandoorne proved the star of the final day of post-season testing at Yas Marina, while the GP3 field was led by a fun duel for the top between Oliver Rowland and Patric Niederhauser.
The GP2 and GP3 Series concluded their joint three-day post-season test session at the 21-turn, 3.451-mile Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi with McLaren junior Stoffel Vandoorne very much in the spotlight as whe went on to set the best time of anyone of the entire week in the final session under the floodlights.

Vandoorne and Facu Regalia had earlier topped the GP2 noon session, with the Formula Renault 3.5 Series runner-up immediately at home for the day at DAMS just ahead of his GP3 counterpart who was spending the day with Barwa Addax. The session saw an early red flag for Daniel Abt stopping the Hilmer #22 on track 25 minutes into the two and a half hour session, and Rene Binder brought out a second just past the hour mark when his Venezuela GP Lazarus ground to a halt.

In the evening session after sunset, Vandoorne was quick to lead again and duly became the first driver to dip under the 1:49s mark all week. An hour in his time was bettered by Rio Haryanto back in the Caterham for the day setting a new time of 1:48.816s just five hundredths of a second faster, and the final hour turned into a tit-for-tat display between between the pair which was finally decided when the Belgian hammered out a searing run of laps to set the best time of the day by the finish with a final lap of 1:48.657s while Trident's GP3 graduate Giovanni Venturini made a successful late bid for second place glory to put himself ahead of Haryanto as the clock ran out.

Once again alternating with the GP2 sessions during the day, the morning GP3 confirmed that an overnight switch to ART had done nothing to break Oliver Rowland's eye-catching performance as the 21-year-old British runner-up in this year's Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup once again set the pace after sweeping both of Wednesday's sessions. There was only one interruption to the early proceedings, when Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum spun the Jenzer Motorsport #12 at turn 21 with 40 minutes remaining in the morning session.

Rowland looked set to finish the day in the top spot in the afternoon as well, quickly claiming the top top. He was deposed half an hour from the end by compatriot Dean Stoneman (Koiranen GP) but quickly bounced back to lead again, only to succumb to a late run 15 minutes from the end by Patric Niederhauser which put the MW Arden at the top spot and stole the fastest time of the day. Rowland's chance to reclaim the honours were interrupted by a second spin of the day for Al Maktoum bringing out the red flag with ten minutes to go.

That concludes the post-season testing for GP2 and GP3 and means that the cars are now being crated up and returned to their respective team factories for the winter. There will be pre-season testing early next year - dates and venues yet to be announced - before the start of the 2014 season, which will include a first visit to the brand new Sochi Olympic Park Circuit in Russia for both series.
