Rio Haryanto

Rio Haryanto

After a 2011 split between GP3 and the Auto GP World Series, 19-year-old Rio Haryanto inched closer to his dream of F1 with a year at Carlin in GP2 making him the first Indonesian to compete at this level of motorsport since Ananda Mikola in International Formula 3000 (2000-1). And it has to be said that nine finishes in the points from 18 races puts him well above the expected curve for a rookie season, with his best result coming at Valencia when he was fifth in the feature race. Perhaps equally important, he had just one single retirement in the entire season (ironically, it came the very next day in Valencia) showing that he also had the consistency together with the wit to stay out of race-ending situations. A lack of any podium finishes means that he was only able to win 38 points over the course of the season, putting him 14th in the championship, but he could well be one to watch in 2013.
