Luca Filippi

Luca Filippi

While the 2011 GP2 champion was Romain Grosjean, arguably the star of last season had been Luca Filippi whose mid-season swap to Scuderia Coloni had transformed his year and blasted him from no-where into the runners-up spot by year's end. In 2012, Filippi had been out of GP2 - and indeed out of racing altogether - trying to put together a deal to run in the US IndyCar Series, but when that didn't come together Filippi heeded the SOS from his old GP2 squad to help them out with a guest appearance at the penultimate race weekend at Monza. Not for the first time, Filippi stole the show displaying all his best driving skills with a dream comeback to win the feature race. It's a shame the story didn't end there, but collision damage in the next day's sprint race put him out of contention, and a last lap run into the wall at Singapore not only put him out of that feature race but left the car too badly damaged to make its race swan song in the sprint race the following day.
