James Calado

James Calado

After finishing as runner-up in the 2011 GP3 Series to Valtteri Bottas, James Calado made an immediate impression in GP2 by winning the post-season exhibition sprint race in Abu Dhabi to make sure he was offered a rookie year in the series with Lotus GP. And he proved beyond doubt that his form was no fluke, by promptly winning the first sprint race of the year at Singapore: he'd go on to win again later in the season at German and took three second places and two third positions over the course of a hugely impressive debut in GP2. It could have been even more had it not been for cruel luck with race strategy on a couple of occasions. At one point Calado threatened to overshadowed his more fancied established team mate Esteban Gutiérrez, but a poor outing at Monza and then illness at Singapore meant he dropped out of the championship top three by the end.
