Giedo van der Garde
After three years in GP2, at the end of last season Dutch driver Giedo van der Garde made it pretty clear that he was done with the series and that it was F1 or bust in 2012. Instead, Caterham made a counter-offer: in return for some FP1 outings with the F1 team, van der Garde would return to the feeder series to spearhead Caterham's GP2 campaign. Perhaps the double duty was a distraction or his heart wasn't quite in it, but he lost a lot of ground over the opening races before clinching a third place in Bahrain and a win in the Catalunya feature to kick-start his season. A double podium weekend at Monaco promised much, but after that he would be fairly anonymous, clinching only one second place (Germany) before at least ending the season on a high with victory in the final sprint race of the year in Singapore to lock up sixth place overall in the championship.
