Following some impressive winter testing performances for Team Lotus, South was invited to qualify for the 1980 Long Beach Grand Prix for McLaren in a Cosworth-powered M29C. He took the McLaren opportunity without consulting the Toleman F2 team to whom he was newly contracted, and they duly fired him before the season began. Later that season had part of his leg amputated following a Can-Am accident in a Paul Newman Lola, meanwhile Brian Henton - who was drafted into the Toleman team to replace him - went on to win the European F2 series…
