Bernoldi's meeting with the wall on lap 210 all but ended Meira's chances, especially as the field eschewed the chance to pit under the yellow, but the result was decided once and for all twelve laps later, three after the restart.
Dixon reclaimed the lead by sliding under Andretti at the start of lap 222 and Hunter-Reay, having disposed of Briscoe, also got a run on the AGR machine. Andretti gave room along the backstretch but then appeared to pinch RHR below the white line entering three. The Ethanol car, caught on the transition, bobbled before getting up into Andretti, sending both hard into the turn four wall.
The yellows returned, this time for good, allowing Dixon to cruise to the flag ahead of the Penske pair, Castroneves coming home ahead of Briscoe. Wheldon claimed fourth from Kanaan, with Mutoh the last car on the lead lap.
Meira, still seeking that elusive first IndyCar win, had to make do with a lapped seventh, with Buddy Rice, Ed Carpenter and a fuel-hampered Danica Patrick rounding out the top ten.
