It is extremely controversial. IndyCar is all about the crashes, particularly 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing' in May (the INDY 500) which Danny won. The races are generally safe but 34 cars on a tight banked oval and 220mph+ was generally asking for trouble (not to mention drivers chasing $5m prizemoney). I do not agree the F1 is still exciting, I would generally fall asleep seeing it now, Im sure most would agree... My heart goes out to Dan who gave the joy of seeing him win 'The 500' last May. RIP Dan

I know Jody has his concerns but no one MAKES these drivers step into the car. They know the risks as soon as they are strapped inside the car. 'Most dangerous motor sport in the world'??? He obviously has never seen the isle of man tt then...

scheckter is going hyper now. more ppl die in air crashes, train accidents and most of them right on the roads. what should be done about them?

motor sport is not that dangerous as they try to unglorify the sporting disciplines such as motogp, f1, indycar, wrc etc.

Jody how many drivers were killed while you were racing and did you see sense and decide it was to dangerous . Racing is so much safer but there will always be deaths as you can,t cover all the bases where speed is concerned soory but thats racing you go balls out or you go home and watch on tele like us .

I hate it when we lose someone in the sport in this way. In this case Jody isn't speaking as an ex-World F1 Champion, he is speaking as a DAD who cares for his son. I can understand that.

RIP Dan

"IndyCar is all about the crashes"

@JOHN

huh?

That is a ridiculous, knee jerk, and outragous statement made obviously by someone who knows nothing about IndyCar. Please leave your hyperbol out of this.

One thing that Jody is 100% correct on is that the set-ups they use on these tracks contributes to this pack type racing.

The aero package is design to have a lot of drag so the cars draft and sling shot back and forth like stock cars and have tons of down force where the drivers don't have to lift off the gas. Add in the high banked 1.5 NASCAR oval and it just spells disaster. This is not the way IndyCar racing on ovals is suppost to be. IndyCars should take away some of the down force and only race flat ovals or ovals with minimum banking.

After facing the death of his dear friend Gilles Villeneuve and witnessing the Wheldon crash last week, I have no question why Jody wants his son to go away from Indycar.

He just do whatever within his means to avoid the same fate happen to his son.
