IndyCar » Surfers waves bye to IRL, hello to A1GP

After protracted, but fruitless, talks about when the race should take place, organisers of the Surfers Paradise IndyCar event have ditched the US series for A1GP.

Seems a sensible decision - the IRL didn''t like the date as it created a gap in the season after the last race in early September and the organizers weren''t going to move it either.

DTM''s in Australia sounded intriquing - imagine the cost of getting those cars across the seas to run one race !

Although i like watching the A1GP,it''s a kick in the teeth that IRL which has been racing there since 1991, won''t be coming back.
After seeing the A1 race on tv when they race at Eastern Creek the crowds were not good, so what make''s them think they will get good crowds at the Gold Coast race.
People will only turn up for the V8''s and that it, some might stay but that''s all.

what a blow for Indycar. But great for A1GP I guess, great track.

@DoubleMC

A1GP is only it's third(I think) season. Give it some time, some races are very well attended.

Too bad the date couldn't be worked out. It's unfortunate for Australia and the IRL. Who cares about A1GP?

Hey DoubleMC, you have a bit of a misunderstanding there.

The IRL did never race at Surfers'. The series that raced a couple of weeks ago is now called "Indy Car", because the IRL name is not used anymore.
Actually, it was the now defunct CART series (then named IndyCar, hence the name of the event: Indy Lexmak) that started appearing on aussie soil back in 1991. After the split (1995) the series had to adopt the CART name, because of the legal dispute with the IRL for the rights to the IndyCar brand-name. Latter, when CART was bankrupted and auctioned, the new owners used the ChampCar World Series name, until it's official death, absorbed by the(guess!) IndyCar series back in March.

Monkeys in charge of IRL at it again. IRL = waste of time to bother, F1 just a ridiculous flea circus, Nascar going on with their heads in the clouds. Personally the only top flight series that has the best racing is sportscars - Lemans.

Hope I didn''t offend too many people but it''s how I see it.

Indycar is not trying to be F1 and that is good. In these hard financial times flying halfway around the world for a single race is not sustainable. I would not miss the Japanese race either. Trying to be an international series was one of the major causes of the split. If Indycar hopes to once again be the most popular series in North America this is where they need to race.
