DARIO FRANCHITTI won the rain-soaked and shortened 91st Indianapolis 500. On lap 164, during a caution for a two-car accident, the rain poured and the race was called.
Franchitti, only the second Scotsman to win the Indy 500 after JIM CLARK in 1965, was greeted by his very excited, rain-soaked wife, actress ASHLEY JUDD, who was dressed in a summer frock and hat befitting of Ascot.
Franchitti was very excited and emotional "I won the Indy 500!!!"
SCOTT DIXON was second, followed by polesitter HELIO CASTRONEVES, last year's Indy 500 winner, SAM HORNISH Jr and RYAN BRISCOE.
There were 24 lead changes among nine drivers, with ten cautions.
Thirteen drivers finished on the lead lap. Seven drivers retired. By all accounts so far, all drivers are mostly unhurt, including MARCO ANDRETTI, who was involved in a spectacular crash just before the rain. He was running right behind his father in 16th place on the lead lap. Marco Andretti was hit from the rear, flipped over, and skidded on his roof into the grass before sort of righting himself. The other driver taken out in the melee was BUDDY RICE, who was one lap down in 17th place. Young Andretti walked to the ambulance.
TONY KANAAN led eight times for 83 laps, the most of any driver. Unofficially, Kanaan is credited with a twelfth-place finish on the lead lap.
