The winning of the 91st Indianapolis 500 by DARIO FRANCHITTI was his fifth Indy Racing League IndyCar win, and his first victory this year.
He led three times for 34 laps, the second highest of the nine race leaders. He last won the IndyCar race at California Speedway in October 2005. For the Andretti Green Racing Team, it's the second 2007 win and its 25th overall, breaking a tie with Team Penske for the most victories by a team entrant. AGR also won the 2005 Indy 500 with DAN WHELDON, who now races with Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
TONY KANAAN led eight times for 83 laps, more than any other driver. He also turned the fastest race lap of 223.420mph on lap 18, winning the 'Quick Start' Award and the 'Drink Smart' Award for the feat.
DAVEY HAMILTON made a successful comeback to IRL racing after six years of recuperation after his big crash at Texas Motor Speedway in June 2001. He finished ninth, on the lead lap, after starting 20th. He and ALEX BARRON both gained eleven positions. Barron started 26th and finished 15th.
There were several other race awards: Safe Driver Award went to SCOTT SHARP, Proven Driver Award to Hamilton; and More Performance Award to SCOTT DIXON. DANICA PATRICK was the top female finisher, in eighth place. SARAH FISHER finished 18th, two laps down, and rookie MILKA DUNO crashed out for a 31st place finish.
All the awards and prizes will be announced and distributed Monday night at the big Indy 500 Banquet.
The race ran 2hr 44min 03.5608secs, with an average race speed of 151.774mph. There were three Panoz chassis cars in the race and all crashed out. No-one ran a T or back-up car in the race.
This year's Indy 500 is the third time that an Indy 500 was stopped twice for rain. The race was ended with the yellow and chequered flags. It was stopped on lap 113 and lap 166. The last time was 2004, and the first time was 1926.
The Indy 500 has been shortened seven times for rain, dating back to 1926.
