2010 Atlantics calendar revealed

Atlantic Championship reveals twelve-date schedule for 2010 despite flagging numbers.

The 37th season of the Atlantic Championship will once again take North America's longest-running open-wheel driver development series to classic road racing facilities throughout North America.

"With another strong schedule for 2010, the Atlantic Championship will once again be the top open-wheel training ground in North America," confirmed series president Ben Johnston, shrugging off thin grids that resulted in fewer than ten cars appearing at the 2009 finale.

"We've got a great mix of facilities lined up for next year. We are again grateful to the American Le Mans Series for sharing their stage with us for a majority of our weekends in 2010, as well as to all of our terrific promoters for welcoming us back to their facilities."

As it did in 2009, the 2010 Atlantic season will get underway at Sebring International Raceway as part of the festivities for the prestigious Mobil 1 12 Hours, running on Friday 19 March, before Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca steps up from this season's finale to stage round two. The move is precipitated by the ALMS calendar and will see Atlantic racing resume after a lengthy break on Saturday 22 May.

One weekend later, the championship will make the first of two 2010 appearances at Connecticut's Lime Rock Park, as part of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series festivities on Memorial Day weekend. Round three is scheduled for Saturday 29 May, and will be the first of two consecutive events that the Atlantics will share Grand-Am, as round four also shares the bill at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday 20 June.

On the following weekend, the Atlantic series makes its way back East for its first double-header of the year, at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The first race of the weekend, round five of the season, is scheduled for Saturday 26 June, with the second half the following day.

The series makes its third visit to Utah's Miller Motorsports Park on the weekend of Saturday 10 July, returning to run alongside the American Le Mans Series. Fourteen days later, it then swings back into action at Lime Rock, this time as part of the annual ALMS event.

Another quick turnaround will follow as the Atlantics conduct a second double-header with a pair of races at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet. The first race of the weekend is set for Saturday 31 July, with race two kicking off August.

The 2010 season also sees the return of the Atlantic Championship to the streets of Trois-Rivieres in Quebec, where the series runs as part of the 41st staging of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres on Sunday 15 August, before drawing to a close at Road Atlanta for the second time in three years, again as part of the Petit Le Mans activities. The season finale is slated for Friday 1 October.

Negotiations are still in progress for a potential 13th event on the 2010 schedule and details on that event will be announced should an agreement be reached. Likewise, plans for series-sanctioned open test sessions are still being finalised and will be announced in the near future.
