Walker snaps up Summerton for St Pete Lights opener

USF1 hopeful Jonathan Summerton will get his season underway with an Indy Lights outing on the streets of St Petersburg this weekend.

Walker Racing has signed Jonathan Summerton to compete in this weekend's Firestone Indy Lights opener on the streets of St Petersburg, handing the Florida resident the #40 entry as he steps up after two years in the Atlantic Championship.

Although the team's current plans are to field a single car for Summerton, there are efforts in place to expand to a second car, but the American will enter the opening round as a potential winner, having turned his first Indy Lights race - at the same venue last year - into second and fourth place finishes, the second from 16th on the grid.

“I am fortunate to have secured Jonathan's services to drive for me again," team owner Derrick Walker commented, "We worked together before back in 2004 in the BMW Series so it's good to be joining forces again to race at St Petersburg. Our programme came together later than I would have liked, so having Jonathan available to us was a bonus.”

The partnership came together thanks to Summerton securing sponsorship from Sim1GP.com, a high-tech digital racing service that simulates real life racing using futuristic technology to prepare drivers for high-speed wheel-to-wheel racing by developing quick reflexes, precision control and decision making skills.

"It has been a difficult time since October, when I was the driver of choice for USF1, which fell apart due to loss of sponsors causing me to have to start trying to find sponsors again," Summerton admitted, "I really appreciate Derrick Walker and Sim1GP for putting this race together. I would also like to thank my long time sponsors Tangled Spider web design, Arai Helmets, Sparco race suits, Smart Race Paint and Andreoni.com cards. It will be great to get back in the car and, with a couple of practices at St Pete, we should soon be back in the action.

"I am really glad to get a chance to race in the Firestone Indy Lights Series, and to be racing in Florida, close to home, will be fun. I have wanted to compete in the IZOD IndyCar Series and, through Indy Lights, this is a great way to do it.”
