The new Dallara chassis to be introduced into the IndyCar Series next season will be named in honour of the late Dan Wheldon.

The 33-year-old had carried out much of the testing work on the new car having found himself without a drive for the 2011 season but returned to action for the season finale in Las Vegas.

However, the former series champion and double Indy 500 winner was then killed following a huge 15 car incident in the early stages of the race, throwing the series into mourning for one of its most popular figures.

In the immediate aftermath of Wheldon's death, calls came for the new Dallara chassis to be named in his honour and the Italian manufacturer has now confirmed that that will be the case - although the exact name has yet to be chosen.

"Dan lives in the memory of everybody at Dallara," Dallara president and founder Gianpaolo Dallara said in a statement Tuesday. "We will honour his memory for the years to come by dedicating the Dallara IndyCar2012 in his name.

"He deserves that."
