IndyCar clarifies FIA statement

IndyCar clarifies comments about the role of the FIA in the investigation into the death of Dan Wheldon
The IndyCar Series has moved to clarify comments about the involvement of the FIA into the death of Dan Wheldon in an accident at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

A statement from IndyCar earlier in the week has said that an investigation has been launched with assistance of both the Automobile Competition Committee of the United States (ACCUS) and the FIA to 'determine the factors involved in the accident'.

However, a further statement has now been issued by the series to clarify the initial comment made, revealing that there is no formal involvement from either ACCUS or the FIA in the investigation.

“The entire Indycar family is saddened by Dan Wheldon's tragic death, and our thoughts continue to be, first and foremost, with Dan's wife, Susie, and his entire family at this incredibly difficult time,” the missive read. “The safety of our drivers, their crews, IndyCar staff, racetrack staff and spectators is always our paramount concern.

“As part of our standard safety protocol, a full investigation has been launched by IndyCar, with assistance from individual members of various motorsports bodies. It was incorrect to state that either ACCUS or FIA are formally involved.

“We hope to have preliminary findings to report within the next several weeks. In the meantime, it would be inappropriate to comment further until the investigative team has had the opportunity to conclude its work.”
