Last chance to vote for your IndyCar Driver of the Year – voting closes today [Thursday, December 8]
2011 has certainly been an unforgettable year for the IZOD IndyCar Series; sadly, not always for the best of reasons.
The season started back in March on the streets of St Petersburg in Florida, took in the centennial Indianapolis 500 in May with that amazing last-corner finish, went through a crash-filled race in Toronto, controversy at New Hampshire and built to a thrilling showdown between title contenders Dario Franchitti and Will Power - only to end in tragedy on the track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Inevitably it's hard to think of 2011 being anything other than 'Dan Wheldon's year,' from both the highs of his second Indy 500 win to the dreadful lows of his untimely death at Vegas. In between he became the perfect ambassador for the series, showed he was a skilful TV commentator, and contributed hugely to the future of the series with his testing of the new Dallara chassis that will now be named in his honour.
But for all that, Wheldon only competed in two races all season before Vegas. What about the other drivers? Did Dario Franchitti shine, or was this really Will Power's breakout year? How about Oriol Servia and James Hinchcliffe putting Newman/Haas Racing back on the map, or Tony Kanaan rebounding from what looked like the end of his IndyCar career to finish in fifth place in the championship? Or Ed Carpenter taking his first-ever win, and Marco Andretti finally back in victory lane after five lean years?
There have been many moments and highlights of the season, and this is your chance to have your say on each of the 26 drivers who competed in at least half (that is, nine or more) of this season's races and tell us how you think they've done this year.
Simply rate each one out of ten and we'll provide your definitive countdown in the coming weeks based on the average scores.
