Bourdais signs new deal with Dragon

10 November 2012

Sebastien Bourdais has confirmed that he will be staying at Dragon Racing in 2013, in what has been described by some sources as a 'multi-year deal' between the Frenchman and Jay Penske's IZOD IndyCar Series team.

“It's a privilege to have Seb once again piloting the #7 Dragon Racing entry," said Penske. "I am truly excited about what can be achieved this coming season and with Seb at the wheel – the best is yet to come."

The announcement stated that Bourdais would be leading the team in a championship campaign, implying that he will run in all 19 of the races currently on the 2013 season calendar.

This season, Bourdais ended up having to sit out the oval races that followed the Indianapolis 500, after the team split with original engine provider but could only get a one-unit replacement deal with Chevrolet that had to be shared between Bourdais and second driver Katherine Legge.

Penske was hopeful that the problems and headaches of the last 12 months would be behind the team next year, however. "2012 was a challenge for us on so many levels," he admitted. "But despite that, towards the end of last season we demonstrated that with the right equipment and strategy, Dragon Racing is a force to be reckoned with.

Bourdais scored the only top-ten finish for a Lotus-powered car in 2012, and after the witch to Chevy he went on to qualify in the top ten five times in six road races during the remainder of the year, clinching a season-best finish of fourth at Mid-Ohio. He said that he was delighted to re-sign with Dragon for a proper run at the title in 2013.

“It is with great pleasure and excitement that I will return for a second season at the wheel of the Dragon Racing/McAfee/Chevy entry," said Bourdais. "To kick things off that early is a great boost for 2013 after all the obstacles we had to go through in 2012.

"With the stability of the staff, the sponsors and the experience we amassed this year, I am very confident we can achieve great results next season," he added.

Further details on new crew members and the future of Katherine Legge with the team will be announced in due course, the statement from the team added.
