Yes, winning the title really does speak volumes - and the Crash.net voters have endorsed the season's outcome by making Ryan Hunter-Reay their IndyCar Driver of the Year. You were expecting someone else, perhaps?

We're certainly not going to argue with the decision to crown Hunter-Reay: not only did he win more races than anyone else all season, he was somehow able to keep his head in the nailbiting season finale to bring home the title by just three points ahead of perennial bridesmaid Will Power. It's been quite a year and quite a performance from Hunter-Reay and there are few people in motorsports that he hasn't impressed in 2012.

Even though he started the year with a podium at St Petersberg and took a great second place in Sao Paulo, no one was really figuring Hunter-Reay as a potential championship contender until he hit that fabulous period in the summer which resulted in a hat-trick of wins at Milwaukee, Iowa and Toronto. His luck faltered at Mid-Ohio and Sonoma so that even with a win at Baltimore he went into the season finale behind Will Power in the points. Mere misfortune befalling Power at Fontana would not be enough: Hunter-Reay also had to deliver a fourth place to be the champion. He did, and he was.

Remarkably, Hunter-Reay is the only American driver in our top ten this year. His compatriots had better keep up with his example if they want to be IndyCar champions and Crash.net Driver of the Year winners in years to come!

Check back later in the week for the details of the averages each driver scored, and what happened to those drivers outside the top ten.
