Season summary:

So near and yet so far: once again, Helio Castroneves comes away from a season of IndyCar without the title. It's amazing to think that the popular and ebullient Brazilian has never won a championship to go with those three Indy 500 victories. He came so close this season, and he would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that meddling double-header weekend at Houston. That's when gearbox problems in both races cost him his lead in the points going into the season finale at Fontana, during which Scott Dixon did enough to clinch the title despite a gritty run by Helio to sixth place on the night.
