Bourdais' Texas penalty withdrawn

IndyCar officials have withdrawn the penalty levied against Sebastien Bourdais that followed his crash with Justin Wilson at Texas earlier this month.
The Verizon IndyCar Series management has announced that it has rescinded a $10,000 fine and season-long probation against KVSH Racing's Sebastien Bourdais which had been handed down two weeks ago.

In a brief statement issued by the series on Wednesday, officials stated that the decision to withdraw the penalties had followed an internal review. No further details about why the decision had been reversed were made public.

The original penalty under Rule 9.3.1 of the series rulebook followed Bourdais' involvement in accident with Dale Coyne Racing's Justin Wilson on lap 121 of the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway earlier in June.

The crash appeared to have been triggered by Bourdais running intentionally low on the track and pinching Wilson onto the apron.

"I saw [Bourdais] got checked up at the previous corner and I knew my only way was on the inside," said Wilson afterwards. "I got a good run, a lot of steam on Sebastian and as I was approaching he started to block but my run was so big, it was too much of a block too late.

"I popped inside but he kept coming until I was out of road and I ended up with two wheels on the apron on turn in and that is never going to work," he added, after spinning out of the race and crashing into Bourdais' car in the process.

Bourdais had been contrite after the crash, saying: "Honestly I don't know if it was a racing incident. I haven't seen anything so I don't know if it's a racing incident, my fault or his fault, but if it's my fault, I apologise."

The announcement that the penalties had been withdrawn came just two days before the next round of the IndyCar season, with practice for the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston doubleheader races scheduled to start on Friday.

The practice sessions will be live-streamed on for the first time since 2010, in a new deal announced by the Series this week.
