IndyCar: Coletti seals 2015 ride with KV Racing
GP2 Series veteran Stefano Coletti has successfully clinched a deal to race in the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series with KV Racing Technology.
KV Racing Technology has confirmed that it has signed Monaco's Stefano Coletti to drive for them in the forthcoming Verizon IndyCar Series championship in 2015, which gets underway in St Petersburg at the end of the month.
The GP2 Series veteran tested with the team at NOLA Motorsports Park in February and has now wrapped up a deal to drive the the #4 KV Racing Technology Chevrolet which will see the 25-year-old make his début alongside team mate Sebastien Bourdais, one of his childhood motor racing inspirations.
"I've always wanted to race in IndyCar and have the opportunity to live overseas, it's a great championship and the competition is very high," said Coletti, who was second fastest on the speed charts t NOLA after the morning session on the final day despite having been in a DW-12 IndyCar once before. He went on to finish the test tied for fifth of the eight Chevrolet powered drivers there.
"When I tested with KV Racing Technology at NOLA a few weeks ago, there was a great atmosphere and the whole team really welcomed me, so I can't wait to get to Indianapolis and start working with the #4 crew and getting to know everyone better," he added.
"It's a great opportunity to be on the same team as a driver like Sebastien Bourdais who his very experienced, very quick and a nice person to work with," Coletti said. "I couldn't have asked for better for my rookie year! I really would like to thank [team co-owners] Kevin Kalkhoven and Jimmy Vasser and also KVRT's General Manager, Steve Moore, for making this possible and look forward to an exciting year with the team!"
"We are very pleased and excited to add a driver of Stefano's talent to KV Racing Technology," said Jimmy Vasser, himself a former race driver int he US open wheel series. "Stefano has shown he can win at a very high level during his time in GP2.
"We were extremely impressed with his knowledge and feedback during the test last month at NOLA," Vassed continued. "There will obviously be a learning curve, especially on ovals, but I think everyone feels that Stefano is up to the task."
Coletti has spent the last four years in the GP2 Series, often in contention for the championship although his best result was sixth place in the standings in 2014. Over his time in the F1 feeder series, Coletti has amassed seven wins amidst a total of 15 podium positions in 90 starts since he made his début with Durango in 2009 in Valencia, Spain. He also scored an additional first place in the GP2 Asia Series in 2011 with Trident Racing.
Coletti claimed two wins in the most recent GP2 season, including a victory in the last race of the season at Abu Dhabi while driving for Racing Engineering.
KV Racing Technology will be back at NOLA Motorsports Park on March 14th for the first run of the new Chevrolet-developed bespoke aero kit components, and will also be taking part in the official pre-season open testing sessions at Barber Motorsports Park on March 16-17.
